The National Police Service (NPS) has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi ahead of the 2025 Jamhuri Day celebrations scheduled for Friday, December 12, at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The measures that the police say are necessary to ensure public safety and smooth coordination of the national event will take effect from 7 am to 3 pm.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, the NPS said Aerodrome Road—also known as Wakihuri Road—will remain closed for the duration of the celebrations.
In addition, the Nairobi Expressway will be shut down in both directions between Capital Centre and Bunyala.
The police advised motorists to plan their movement early to avoid delays.
According to the advisory, traffic approaching the stadium from Langata Road will be diverted at the Madaraka Roundabout, with vehicles redirected toward the Lusaka Road Roundabout.
Motorists using the Expressway from Westlands will be required to exit at the Bunyala interchange, while those travelling from Mlolongo will exit at Capital Centre.
The police said the closures are part of a broader inter-agency plan to manage the heavy traffic expected around the stadium precincts, where thousands of Kenyans are anticipated to gather for the national holiday.
“The National Police Service is working collaboratively with relevant agencies to ensure smooth traffic flow and a successful event,” the notice read.
Motorists have been urged to remain patient, comply with all traffic rules, and follow directions issued by officers deployed along the affected routes.
The NPS also warned that violations of traffic regulations or attempts to defy the restrictions will attract stern action.
The Jamhuri Day celebrations, one of Kenya’s most significant national events, traditionally draw large crowds and high-level delegations, often necessitating enhanced security and logistical controls in the capital.
This year’s event at Nyayo National Stadium is expected to follow the same pattern, with increased movement around the surrounding road network.
The police have encouraged the public to stay informed and use alternative routes to minimize inconvenience during the temporary disruption.
